April 20-23 Weekly Update

Hello Parents,

I hope you’ve been having a wonderful week! Here are a few highlights from our classroom:

Health and Wellness

This week, the students took part in a nutrition workshop where they learned about healthy eating using the food guide. They explored the differences between whole foods, processed foods, and ultra-processed foods. The class also had fun cutting and preparing ingredients, and enjoyed making and eating a tasty parfait together.

Earth Day
Students learned about the significance of Earth Day and explored ways to protect and care for our environment. They discussed responsible actions such as reducing waste, recycling, and conserving resources. Students then applied their learning by writing thoughtful letters to the Earth, expressing their understanding and commitment to helping the planet.

Literacy/Writing

We continued working through our literacy centres this week and are continuing to learn about story elements. Students have been refining and editing their circle stories, focusing on improving their ideas and organization.

Math
This week, students continue to practice multiplication charts to build fluency. We also completed a short “Show What You Know” (SWYK) on fractions.

Science
In Science, students are working on posters that show how energy moves from one living thing to another. We also explored simple food chains found in different environments.

Hello Parents,
I hope you’ve been having a wonderful week! Here are a few highlights from our classroom.

Literacy

We continued working through our literacy centers this week! Activities were adapted to meet each student at their level, helping everyone feel successful while building their reading and writing skills.

We learned about story elements and practiced creating story mountains using the books students are currently reading. This helps students organize their thinking by mapping out the beginning, rising action, climax, and resolution of a story, supporting reading comprehension and helping students use this structure when writing their own stories.

Writing
This week, students explored mentor texts that model circle stories. They learned about cause and effect and how events are connected in a story. Using this understanding, students began drafting their own circle stories, making sure their endings connect back to the beginning. We will continue developing and refining these stories next week.

Math
This week, students continued to review how to tell time and practiced using multiplication charts to build fluency. We also worked on comparing fractions through hands-on centre activities, helping students understand which fractions are larger or smaller using visuals and concrete materials.

Science
In Science, we learned about food chains and how living things depend on each other for energy. Students explored the roles of producers (plants), consumers (animals), and decomposers (organisms that break down dead matter). We also discussed how energy moves from one living thing to another and looked at simple food chains found in different environments.

Art
In Art, we are creating a tulip flower bouquet along with a thank-you message to show appreciation for someone special in our school. Ask your child who she is!

P.E.

We played Drum Fit, a fun and energetic activity where students used drumsticks and fitness balls to build coordination and stay active.

Social Studies / Writing
In Social Studies, students learned about why protected areas and parks are important for protecting land and natural resources. They also wrote opinion pieces on the question: “Should road builders build a new road and parking lot through a protected park in Alberta?” using the TIDE strategy. After completing their first draft, students shared their ideas in a circle discussion.
