Dear Families,

We hope you had a great week! Here is a highlight of our learning:

Literacy / Writing
This week, we continued our literacy centres, focusing on reading comprehension and multisyllabic words.  Students are finishing their nonfiction writing pieces and have begun a new creative story. They are practicing story structure by using story maps to plan their ideas and develop the plot. Students are also practicing on adding descriptive words and using dialogue to make their writing more engaging.

Math
Students are continuing to review a variety of math concepts based on their individual learning needs.

Social Studies
We have started a new unit on Citizenship. Students are learning how people contribute to their communities and how their actions can make a difference. We are also exploring the concept of quality of life, including what helps make life safe, healthy, and happy.

Students enjoyed participating in gymnastic!

A detailed parent letter will be sent home next week.

We continue to look for five parent volunteers per class to support this experience. Volunteers must have current CBE volunteer clearance. If you are interested and have not yet contacted your child’s teacher, please email them as soon as possible.

Dear Families,

We hope you have had a wonderful week! Here is a quick update on what we have been learning in our classroom:

Indigenous Knowledge and Connections

This week, students learned how First Nations, Métis, and Inuit knowledge of animals and seasons supports strong connections to the land. We explored the buffalo as an important source of food, clothing, and materials, and connected this learning to the Medicine Wheel to understand seasonal changes and balance in nature.

Literacy Centre

In small group reading, students are focusing on applying the reading strategies they have learned throughout the term. They are using these strategies to support their understanding while reading self-selected and grade-level texts, and are responding thoughtfully to their reading. You might ask your child which reading strategies they find the most challenging and why.

Writing / Science

Students have completed their research on their chosen animals and are now learning how to organize their information. They are working on writing a fiction story on the computer and a non-fiction piece on paper, integrating their learning from both Science and Language Arts, and exploring different ways to present their ideas.

Writing / Poetry / Art
We held a mini “Poetry Café” where students read aloud their Mother’s Day poems with the class. They kept their work a surprise so it could be a special gift at home, and many students shared with me how proud their moms and family were when they received them!

Math

Students completed a short check-in to review various math concepts. They are also continuing to do revision on multiplication and division as well as their creative “Design Your Zoo” project.

Physical Education
Students had a great time participating in a variety of active games and activities!
