Dear Families,

I hope you are all doing well! Here is a quick update on what we have been learning in our classroom this week.

Reading:
We continued our routine literacy centers. Students practiced summarizing by identifying key ideas and retelling texts in their own words.

Writing:
Students explored story elements through reading and focused on how authors use dialogue, varied saying words, and onomatopoeia to make writing more engaging. They practiced writing sentences with proper dialogue punctuation and applied these skills by planning with a story mind map and writing their own stories.

Math

This week in math, students learned about measurement using metric and imperial units. They practiced measuring, estimating, and choosing appropriate units. Students also explored the perimeter and found unknown side lengths of polygons.

Science

This week in science, students completed their food chain posters in different environments, from oceans to mountains, showing how energy flows in various ecosystems. They then participated in a gallery walk, where they displayed their work and explored classmates’ posters around the classroom. Students also had the opportunity to present and explain their own food chains, demonstrating their understanding of how energy moves through ecosystems.

Health and Wellness

This week in wellness, students learned about stages of development, including how abilities (what you can do) and responsibilities (what you are expected to do) change as they grow. They also learned about fixed and growth mindsets, and how a growth mindset helps them try new things, learn from mistakes, and keep improving.

Field Experience

This week in field studies, we took advantage of the warm weather and went on a nature walk. Students used their five senses to observe the outdoors, recording sensory details on a chart. They also had a sit spot where they paused to quietly observe their surroundings and notice changes and details in nature. Students enjoyed the beautiful weather while engaging in their outdoor learning experiences.
