Hello Families!
Grade 3 students had a busy and exciting week, gaining exposure to new experiences in science, writing, math, cultural celebrations, and art!
Reminders:
March 12 – 100th Day of School!
Students are invited to celebrate by dressing like they are 100 years old. We are excited to see all the creative outfits!
March 19th and 20th – Student-Led Conferences
Student-Led Conferences are coming up! Join us to celebrate your child’s progress and see the learning they’ve been exploring. Don’t forget to book your time!
Highlights from Our Week:
Literacy
This week in literacy, we continued our literacy centers and learned about Holi, the Festival of Colors. We read a story about how Holi celebrates the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. Students who celebrate Holi shared their traditions with the class and were proud to teach us about their culture. Ask your child what they learned about Holi and the colors used during the celebration.
Writing
Students learned how to use the TIDE strategy to organize their paragraphs while writing about our science topic: What does a paleontologist do? Students worked on clearly stating their ideas, adding supporting details, and organizing their thoughts into a paragraph while connecting their writing to what they learned in science. Ask your child to explain the TIDE and share one fact they wrote about paleontologists.
Science – Paleontologists at Work!
Students had an exciting week working like real paleontologists! They carefully “dug” for fossils and tried to research the fossil they discovered. Just like real scientists, they observed, recorded information, and learned about animals or plants that lived long ago. The classroom was full of excitement as students uncovered their fossils and shared their discoveries. Ask your child what fossil they discovered and what they learned about it!
Students reviewed addition and subtraction algebra, focusing on finding the unknown number in an equation. We also continued practicing multiplication and division word problems and reviewed different ways to represent multiplication and division. Students continue to practice skip counting by 4s.
Art
To continue celebrating the Lunar Year of the Horse, students explored Chinese calligraphy by creating their own fun version of “Fai Chun”—traditional red banners that bring good luck, happiness, and prosperity. Students enjoyed practicing brush strokes, designing their banners, and writing meaningful messages. Ask your child about the message they wrote and what it means!
Students learned about families around the world and how different cultures spend time together. They created a one-page photo book with captions describing the activities they do and how they spend quality time with their families and other important people in their lives. Ask your child who they included in their photo book and why those people are important to them.
