March 16-19 Weekly Update

IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES

March 23–27 – Spring Break (No school)
March 30 – First day of classes after Spring Break

Hello Families!

It was wonderful meeting you and celebrating students’ best work and what they are proud of!

Our class will need more volunteers for our upcoming field trip. Please reach out as soon as possible if you are available!

Here are the highlights from our week:

Writing/Science

In writing, we revisited persuasive writing, building on previous learning with the question. Should students be allowed to dig fossils? Students explored both sides of the topic and practiced sharing their opinions with clear reasons and supporting details. They used the TIDE graphic organizer and followed the POWER writing process (Plan, Organize, Write, Edit, Revise) to develop and improve their work. Since this was a revisited unit, students showed greater confidence and worked more independently, needing minimal support, and felt proud of their growth as writers.

Math

This week, students learned how to tell time. They explored the relationship between seconds, minutes, and hours, practiced reading both analog and digital clocks, and described time using a.m. and p.m. Students also learned to express time within a 24-hour cycle.

Social Studies
Students continued learning about natural resources. They explored how natural resources influence where people settle and how these resources contribute to economic development and prosperity.

P.E.
Students had fun learning how to play 9 Square in the Air. Ask your child how the game works!

Have a wonderful Spring Break!

============================================================

Hello Families!

Grade 3 students had a fun and engaging week, exploring new topics

and learning through hands-on activities.

Highlights from Our Week:

An Exciting Visit from Our Knowledge Keeper

This week, Grade 3 students had an amazing opportunity to welcome Chantel Chagnon, who shared Traditional drumming, songs, storytelling, and Indigenous teachings. Students explored the Medicine Wheel and were captivated by the Legend of Turtle Island. They discovered that drums are powerful tools for healing, ceremony, and celebration. Chantal also showed how drums are made and explained the special meanings behind different drum weaving styles. Students absolutely loved these hands-on, interactive experiences!

Hundred Years Old Day
Students had fun dressing up as 100-year-old characters!

Literacy, Wellness & Writing

Students continued working in literacy centers and explored texts about empathy, learning how understanding others’ feelings strengthens relationships. In writing, they practiced different sentence structures and identified the types of sentences they encountered in their reading. We focused on onomatopoeia while exploring Ten Ways to Hear Snow, using words from the story to create their own Snow Haiku poems, with some students even integrating their knowledge of science. Next, we will continue exploring Limerick forms on a variety of topics while learning additional types of figurative language.

Math

This week, students continued practicing multiplication and division, solving both one-step and multi-step word problems. They strengthened their number sense through skip counting by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 and explored simple algebraic thinking. Students also reviewed transformations and reinforced their learning through math games.

Social Studies
Students learned about natural resources and how they are used in daily life, including the differences between renewable and non-renewable resources found in Alberta.

Science
Students began learning about the layers of soil and how scientists observe and study them to understand the earth’s structure.

Art

Students started creating bookmarks as a fun and useful tool to support their reading.

March 2 -6 Weekly Update

Hello Families!

Grade 3 students had a busy and exciting week, gaining exposure to new experiences in science, writing, math, cultural celebrations, and art!

Reminders:

March 12 – 100th Day of School!

Students are invited to celebrate by dressing like they are 100 years old. We are excited to see all the creative outfits!

March 19th and 20th – Student-Led Conferences

Student-Led Conferences are coming up! Join us to celebrate your child’s progress and see the learning they’ve been exploring. Don’t forget to book your time!

Highlights from Our Week:

Literacy
This week in literacy, we continued our literacy centers and learned about Holi, the Festival of Colors. We read a story about how Holi celebrates the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. Students who celebrate Holi shared their traditions with the class and were proud to teach us about their culture. Ask your child what they learned about Holi and the colors used during the celebration.

Writing
Students learned how to use the TIDE strategy to organize their paragraphs while writing about our science topic: What does a paleontologist do? Students worked on clearly stating their ideas, adding supporting details, and organizing their thoughts into a paragraph while connecting their writing to what they learned in science. Ask your child to explain the TIDE and share one fact they wrote about paleontologists.

Science – Paleontologists at Work!
Students had an exciting week working like real paleontologists! They carefully “dug” for fossils and tried to research the fossil they discovered. Just like real scientists, they observed, recorded information, and learned about animals or plants that lived long ago. The classroom was full of excitement as students uncovered their fossils and shared their discoveries. Ask your child what fossil they discovered and what they learned about it!

Math

Students reviewed addition and subtraction algebra, focusing on finding the unknown number in an equation. We also continued practicing multiplication and division word problems and reviewed different ways to represent multiplication and division. Students continue to practice skip counting by 4s.

Art
To continue celebrating the Lunar Year of the Horse, students explored Chinese calligraphy by creating their own fun version of “Fai Chun”—traditional red banners that bring good luck, happiness, and prosperity. Students enjoyed practicing brush strokes, designing their banners, and writing meaningful messages. Ask your child about the message they wrote and what it means!

Health and Wellness
Students learned about families around the world and how different cultures spend time together. They created a one-page photo book with captions describing the activities they do and how they spend quality time with their families and other important people in their lives. Ask your child who they included in their photo book and why those people are important to them.

P.E.
Hockey Time!!
